Evangeline Downs Training Center will be closing its gates for good. Notices went out to all trainers stabled there on June 29th stating they can remain there until August 15th but by that point all horses must be off the premises. An unnamed source explained “the cost of repair and the fines are too much and basically management gave up.” “Management promised a ton of money that was unfortunately denied.”
It is interesting Delta Downs has received state breeding money this year allowing them to increase purses 12-15%. Delta Downs is constantly faced with issues of horse who have raced there recently winding up in kill lots.
“They didn’t want to invest in becoming compliant with EPA any longer.” Some horsemen expressed the feeling that they were being cut out. It is always unfortunate when any racetrack or training center closes and as always it is difficult for the horsemen to scramble to find other arrangements.
