Gleneagles got his stud career off the right way when Highland Chief, his very first runner to hit the racetrack won his debut in the West Berkshire Brewery Newcomers EBF Maiden Stakes at Newbury April 12.

The Paul Cole trained colt raced in the  middle of the pack before launching his bid nearing the final furlong. A duel ensued with Separate, a daughter of fellow first-season sire Cable Bay, but Highland Chief showed some determination and heart to lead late before prevailing by a neck. He earned advance odds of 33-1 for the Coventry Stakes (Grade 2) at Royal Ascot.
