Rekindling Takes Melbourne Cup

Rekindling took the Melbourne Cup from Johannes Vermeer, wearing him down deep in the stretch.

Interestingly it was no surprise an O’Brien trained horse won a major race, but it was a surprise that young Joseph O’Brien just 18 months into his training career beat a horse trained by his Dad Aidan who needs no introduction. Frankie Dettori who has been trying to win the Melbourne Cup for what seems like forever rode last year’s winner and favorite Almandin, and finished 12th. Humidor, second to Winx in the Cox Plate last out, finished 19th.
