RIP Penny Chenery

September 20, 2017

Penny Chenery has passed away at 95 years old. Best known for owning Riva Ridge and Secretariat, Penny was also considered an ambassador of the sport by many and will be missed.

We all know Secretariat and that he won the Triple Crown but what gets mentioned a lot less is that Riva Ridge, his stablemate, won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont the year before. He likely would have won the Preakness too had it not rained. Riva Ridge hated the slop and the track in Baltimore was sloppy that day. Bee Bee Bee who won the race couldn’t warm Riva Ridge up on a fast track.

Secretariat and Riva Ridge raced in the Marlboro Cup, a race equivalent to the Breeders’ Cup Classic back then with Secretariat easily handling his older stablemate.
